Ambedkar: Father of River Valley Projects in India!

Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar, who had to struggle for drinking water, was the one who planned the country's water policy. 78 years ago #on this 3rd January in 1945, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar has presented an outline for Damodar Valley Project on the lines of Tennessee Valley in America. Most of the water projects in India were planned under his guidance. He stated, "The Damodar waterway task is the principal venture & will be a multi-reason venture". Dr. Ambedkar was the creator of Damodar Valley project, Hirakud project, The son river valley project.

In 1945, under the chairmanship of #Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, it was decided to invest in the potential benefits of controlling the Mahanadi for multi- purpose use. He evolved a new water and power policy during 1942-46 to utilise the water resources of the country to the best advantage of everybody and the Tennessee Valley Scheme of America was an ideal model to emulate. He was instrumental in evolving multipurpose approach for water resources development on the basis of river valley basin, and introduction of the concept of river valley authority which are summarily now-a-days termed as Integrated Water Resources Management. The river valley projects which were under the active consideration of the Labour Dept during 1944-46 were the Damodar River Valley projects, the Sone River Valley projects, the Mahanadi (the Hirakud Project) and the Kosi and others on river Chambal and rivers of the Deccan. Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, as the Executive Member (Labour), addressed five conferences between Nov 15, 1943 and Nov 8, 1945. Two on the Damodar Valley (Calcutta, Jan 3 and Aug 23, 1945), one on the development of Orissa’s rivers (Cuttack, Nov 8, 1945) and 2nd on electric power (Delhi Oct 25, 1943 and Feb 2, 1945). His contributions towards river projects and legacy will continue to inspire us.
